Life often feels like a browser with 17 tabs open, each demanding attention, and one of them playing music you can’t quite locate. If you’re juggling unexpected repairs and big decisions that require waiting, you know how overwhelming it can be. Waiting tests our patience, especially for those who like to control every outcome. But there’s a way to find peace amid the noise and uncertainty.

Understanding the Noise: Fear vs. Guidance

When life feels chaotic, it’s easy to confuse fear with guidance. Fear screams loudly, demanding immediate answers and full control. It rushes you to make plans that cover every possible outcome, often leaving you exhausted and anxious.

In contrast, guidance—whether from your inner wisdom, faith, or intuition—does not shout. It nudges gently, offering just enough light to take the next step. It encourages peace and honesty rather than panic and pressure.

Ask yourself when a thought arises:

  • Does this pull me toward calm and clarity?

  • Or does it push me into stress and urgency?

The difference is subtle but crucial. Guidance challenges you but never bulldozes your peace.

The Power of Tiny Steps

Big decisions and waiting periods can feel paralyzing. The key is to focus on the next faithful step, not the entire journey. This approach breaks down overwhelming tasks into manageable actions.

Try this simple exercise:

Write one sentence:

“The next faithful step I can take is ____.”

This isn’t about having the perfect plan or knowing every detail. It’s about identifying a small, doable action that moves you forward.

Then, say a short prayer or affirmation:

“I’ll do my part. You do Yours. Please help me not confuse urgency with true guidance.”

This practice helps you stay grounded and focused on what you can control while releasing the rest.

Managing Repairs and Surprises

Unexpected repairs, like “surprises hiding behind drywall,” are a perfect example of life’s interruptions. They demand immediate attention but often come with uncertainty about cost, timing, and impact. I recently discovered I had bats living behind my walls, and believe me, getting rid of them was not only expensive, but exhausting.

Here’s how to handle these moments:

  • Pause and assess: Take a breath before reacting.

  • Prioritize: Decide what must be fixed now and what can wait (I sure couldn't wait for them to take over my whole house!)

  • Seek help: Don’t hesitate to ask for expert advice or support.

  • Adjust expectations: Accept that some things are out of your control.

By treating surprises as temporary challenges rather than crises, you reduce stress and maintain clarity.

Waiting Without Losing Control

Waiting is one of the hardest parts of life, especially for those who prefer to act immediately. But waiting doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing what you can and trusting the process.

Here are some ways to stay productive and peaceful while waiting:

  • Focus on what’s next: Keep your attention on the next small step.

  • Practice patience: Remind yourself that waiting is part of growth.

  • Stay connected: Talk to trusted friends or mentors about your feelings.

  • Reflect and learn: Use this time to gain insight and prepare for what’s ahead.

Waiting becomes less frustrating when you see it as an active, intentional pause rather than a passive delay.

Recognizing True Guidance

Sometimes, it’s hard to tell if a thought or feeling is genuine guidance or just anxiety dressed up nicely. Here are some signs to help you discern:

  • True guidance brings peace: Even if it challenges you, it doesn’t create panic.

  • Anxiety feels urgent and overwhelming: It pushes you to rush decisions.

  • Guidance encourages honesty: It invites you to face reality calmly.

  • Anxiety often leads to avoidance or overthinking: It traps you in “what if” scenarios.

When in doubt, return to your tiny step and prayer. This simple practice can clear the fog.

Practical Example: Facing a Pending Decision

Imagine you’re waiting to hear back about a job offer or a big move. The unknown can feel like a heavy weight. Instead of trying to solve everything at once, focus on one small action: updating your resume, researching the new city, or setting up a budget.

Write down:

“The next faithful step I can take is updating my resume.”

Then, pray or affirm your trust in the process. This keeps you moving forward without being overwhelmed by the entire situation.

Embracing Imperfection and Uncertainty

Life with many tabs open is inherently imperfect and uncertain. Accepting this reality is freeing. You don’t need to have all the answers or control every outcome.

Focus on:

  • Progress, not perfection

  • Faith in the process, not in your ability to predict everything

  • Peace in the present moment, not anxiety about the future

This mindset shift transforms chaos into a series of manageable moments.

Life’s chaos doesn’t have to steal your peace. By recognizing the difference between fear and true guidance, focusing on tiny faithful steps, and embracing waiting as part of the journey, you can navigate even the busiest seasons with calm and clarity.
