Happiness is a universal desire, yet it often springs from the simplest moments in our daily lives. Let’s explore what happiness feels like, how it affects us, and how we can nurture it—even during tough times.


What Do We Feel When We Do Something That Makes Us Happy?

When we engage in activities that bring us joy, we often experience a mix of emotions—peace, relief, excitement, or even a sense of accomplishment. For example:

  • Watering the plants – peace, calm

  • Cooking a favorite meal – creativity, comfort

  • Listening to music – joy, relaxation

  • Cleaning the house – control, relief

  • Walking in nature – freedom, awe

These feelings are more than fleeting pleasures; they are signals from our mind and body that we are in tune with what matters to us.


What Happens in Our Mind and Body When We Are Happy?

Happiness triggers the release of “feel-good” chemicals like dopamine and serotonin in our brains. Physically, we may notice relaxed muscles, a slower heart rate, and even a smile we can’t suppress. Mentally, happiness can boost our creativity, resilience, and ability to connect with others.

Scriptures and spiritual texts often encourage us to seek joy and share it with others. For example, Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Happiness is seen not just as a personal feeling, but as a way to honor life and the Creator.


What if We Commit to Doing at Least One Happy Thing Per Day?

Imagine the impact of intentionally doing something that makes you happy every day. It could be as simple as enjoying a cup of tea, calling a friend, or taking a walk. Over time, these small acts can build a foundation of well-being and gratitude.


How to Be Happy During Hard Times

Happiness doesn’t mean ignoring pain or struggle. Instead, it’s about finding light in the darkness—cherishing small joys, practicing gratitude, and reaching out for support. Sometimes, just remembering a happy moment or doing something kind for yourself can make a difference.

What If What Makes Us Happy Is Negative or Prejudicial for Our Body?

It’s important to reflect on whether our sources of happiness are truly nourishing. If an activity brings temporary pleasure but harms our body or mind, consider seeking healthier alternatives. True happiness uplifts and sustains us, rather than causing regret or harm. I am aware that there are a couple of things that make me happy during the moment, but unfortunately, affect my body, my alertness and my sleep. I love sugar, I enjoy partying late (which -at my age- is 9:00 PM), drinking energy drinks, among others... Working on switching those ones with blog-writing!
